Scope and Contents

This subseries contains correspondence, diaries, juvenile writings, newspaper clippings and other miscellaneous materials collected by or created by Helen Troubridge Bate. Correspondents are largely relatives, particularly her brothers Thomas and Ernest and their families as well as assorted Gurney cousins. This subseries also includes some legal and estate documents.

Biographical Note

Helen Troubridge Bate was born in 1866 and was the youngest child of Louisa Gurney Troubridge and Thomas St. Vincent Troubridge. Often called "Limpet" by her siblings, Helen was talented in watercolors but lacked the drive to dedicate herself to an artistic life. lived with her sister Amy in London until she married John Bate in 1917. After his death in 1937, Helen lived at More House until her death in 1958.
