The English correspondence of Marcel Schwob

 Collection
Identifier: MS.2025.013

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 5 bound volumes containing the English (and some German) correspondence of Marcel Schwob from a wide variety of correspondents, from personal friends to professional colleagues to strangers. The majority of correspondence is written to Schwob himself, but there are also many letters written to Schwob's wife, actress Marguerite Moreno, or to the two of them as a couple. The letters are organized largely alphabetically by sender (due to some errors in interpreting people's signatures, the alphabetization is not always correct), and bound into a series of 5 volumes. The last volume also contains a section of letters written in German to Schwob. Correspondents include Vincent O'Sullivan, Charles Whibley, Arnold Bennett, F. Marion Crawford, Henry Brokman, Robert Harborough Sherard, Theodore F. Spicer-Simson, and Arthur Symons.

This collection also includes some letters from bookseller Thomas Goldwasser to former owner Barry Humphries, which make it clear that letters from W.E. Henley were removed from the volumes in about 1999 and sold to Mark Samuels Lasner; they are not a part of the Clark Library's collection. There are other places in the volumes where it appears that items may have been excised, but it is unclear what materials these were.
