Biographical Note

Beatrice Warde was born in New York on September 20, 1900. An early interest in calligraphy, which she learned at school, led to her learning about typography and letter forms while attending Barnard College and Columbia University. Warde was best known for her work as a typographer as well as authoring the essay "The Crystal Goblet." Warde worked as the marketing manager for the Monotype Corporation from 1929 until her retirement in 1960. She was a typographical scholar who would frequently lecture on the subject in England and the US. Warde was also a devout Roman Catholic. She died September 16, 1969.

Evan Robertson Gill (1892-1968) had 12 siblings and was the younger brother of artist Eric Gill. Evan wrote about Eric's works and later published a bibliography of his work. Evan was a banker, as well as an avid book and stamp collector. Evan married Mabel Rimmer Gill (1892-1975) in Liverpool in 1921.
