General Physical Description note
Inventories and valuations by Oxford appraiser William Bridgwater for student lodgings occupied by Oscar Wilde at Magdalen College from 1874-1876. These inventories record the furnishings and fixtures remaining in the rooms when Wilde moved into them, not his personal furniture. Each inventory includes the full description of the lodging location and the name of the person who occupied the room before Wilde (for instance, "Chaplain's Quad, no. 1, 2 Pair Right, late Lee Esqre Oct/74"). All three valuations are signed "Willm. Bridgwater appraiser" and are docketed "Mr. Wilde" on the verso. These items are bound together with certificate dated November 22, 1878 stating that Oscar Wilde had passed the required examination in religion at Magdalen College. The inventories are tipped in to the volume, and the certificate is window mounted into its page.
