Scope and Contents note
This subseries includes manuscripts of speeches, plays, poems, and other literary works created by Oscar Wilde and his coterie. Many are in the author's hand. Virtually all of the titles given to the works have been supplied by later catalogers and scholars. They are arranged alphabetically by author or originator, and then by title. General Physical Description note
Both the manuscript and the typescript begin: "Elder tree, there stands a neglected grave." This work was included as a facsimile in Collected Works (Keller, 1907), Volume 11, page 237, and the typescript (identified in May 1998 by Merlin Holland) includes the entire text of the printed facsimile. The Clark's manuscript fragment is only a portion of the page reproduced in full in the Keller volume (identified in July 2024 by Sandra Leonard), and close comparison proves that this is the same manuscript copy from which the facsimile was made before 1907. The current location of the other half of the page (which would begin "She is fairer than the Star of Evening when he rises from the deep sea") is unknown.
These items were acquired separately: the manuscript fragment was purchased from John F. Fleming, Inc. in 1959 (accession MS.1959.013), but the acquisition details for the typescript are unknown. The typescript could possibly come from the collections of Christopher Millard and/or A.J.A. Symons, as it was housed with uncataloged items from the A.J.A. Symons collection previous to cataloging in 2024.
