Typescript of an unpublished fairytale by Oscar Wilde (likely transcribed by Christopher Millard), about 1907?
Scope and Contents
Typescript of a story fragment beginning: "Elder tree, there stands a neglected grave." This text was included as a facsimile in Collected Works (Keller, 1907), Volume 11, page 237, and this typescript was identified in May 1998 by Merlin Holland. This typescript includes the entire text of the printed facsimile. The Clark also owns a manuscript fragment of this same work (accession MS.1959.013), which is only a portion of the page reproduced in full in the Keller volume (identified in July 2024 by Sandra Leonard); close comparison proves that this is the same manuscript copy from which the facsimile was made.
It is unknown whether the typescript was made from the original manuscript before 1907, or if it was made from the facsimile in the Keller edition.
It is possible that this typescript was made by Christopher Millard, as it is written in the same (or similar) purple-blue typewriter ink as most of his typescripts. It is unclear whether the typescript originally was a part of A.J.A. Symons' collection, but in 2024, it was found housed alongside the items described here in Box 1/Folder 6. The typewritten notes from Millard on the Keller edition of Wilde, housed in Box 1/Folder 8, may also be connected to this typescript.
The manuscript and typescript are housed together in msWilde 81/Folder 12.
