Caryatid, 1926-1927
Scope and Contents
Caryatid. Original carving in pine, executed in Capel-y-ffin in 1926-1927 from a Wellingtonia pine cut down on the site. The carving stands 7 feet high and is one of Gill's very few essays in woodcarving of this size. No model was used. Note: Unlike many of Gill's stone carvings which were roughed out by apprentices and finished by Gill this wood carving is entirely his own work. Conservation note: "As a result of the wood drying out there is a vertical crack down the back and this has been filled in. Also a number of wormholes, which have been treated" (from acquisition catalog card).
