General

Manuscript sheet in Wilde's hand on one folio sized sheet of lined paper, backed with acidic brown paper. Sheet numbered "1" in Wilde's hand at the top of the page. Likely a sheet removed from a collection of epigrams dispersed before 1929, when 6 similar leaves were sold at the Jerome Kern sale. (These leaves were later sold at the Marjorie Wiggin Prescott sale in 1981 as lot 427, where they were purchased by Viscountess Eccles, and are now part of the British Library collections). The Clark Library purchased another leaf originally from this collection in 1952, numbered "8" in Wilde's hand (now in MS Wilde Box 81/Folder 5). The Clark also owns another set of epigrams on 8 leaves of the same or similar paper (also in MS Wilde Box 81/Folder 5). Purchase, Jonathan Hill at Christie's, 9 December 1993, lot 138 (accession MS.1993.005).
