Clapton house bills, 1786
Scope and Contents
This collections contains financial records, inventories, bills and receipts from the estate of Sir John Webb, Baronet, of Odstock, Wiltshire, dating from 1785 to 1802. Many records deal with Webb's London home, Clapton House, as well as other properties in Clapton, including Hester Solomon’s House and Mrs Hutchins’s Boarding School. The receipts include estimates and invoices for plumbing, glazing, masonry, upholstery, cloth work, and general building work, as well as bills of receipt for Hackney Poor Rates, Church taxes (New Church, Hackney), and Hackney water-works. There are also receipts relating to building work at Mr Burton’s house in Grosvenor Place, including four invoices for work carried out on behalf of Mr Soane. There is in addition, an invoice for work carried out by John Soane (presumably the architect Sir John Soane) for the executors of Joseph Webb Esq., for surveying and valuing a house in Hampstead and drawing plans for possible alterations. Webb’s estate was overseen in Trust by Edward Arrowsmith who continued to act as Webb’s agent after his death in 1797.
