Biographical Note

Mabel Duffield Foster was born in 1881 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to John M. Foster and Mary Duffield Foster, but moved with her family to Butte, Montana as a small child. Mabel and her older sister Lulu were sent to ladies’ seminary in Pittsburgh, but remained active figures in Butte social life. In 1901, Mabel married William Andrews Clark, Jr. She gave birth to their son, William Andrews Clark, III, in December 1902 but died of sepsis on New Years’ Day 1903.
